In Honor of a 93 Year Old Man by an Alpine Lake in an Alpine Village

Never dreamed I would be doing this one day. A Real Good Bye to my Dad :) So I am renaming this blog in Honor of His last days in an Alpine Village.

When he past on at age 93 because of a well meaning Doctor, I am sure! Yes by a Doctors orders and given by a very sad Nurse afterwards, I could see! He had reacted to that medication and had a fatal heart attack instantly, right before her eyes! She rushed to call me, in a panic! But it really it was too late for saving him!

It was at that time when all the folks were asked to plant trees in their yards to give shade and Beauty. So a big tree starting program began!:) I saw pots of baby trees everywhere growing and getting ready for their big day:) So for my Dad / and a GrandDad, A Pine Tree was planted in His Memory, right there in the yard where he had lived in the last days of his life.

So in His honor and for Alpine Lakes and Villages Everywhere ! We are ready to start on a New Adventure here at Beauty In Art.

He would like this one on an Alaska Lake, one of his favorite States. As I try to find Pictures of His Pine Tree.

Funny how you never think that one day a picture of that tree would be important. I know 'Google' has it or was that 'Earth' has one taken from Space. Can you believe that! A Space Map of Earth right down to your yard/ driveway and the cars parked there! Oh yes, I see someone waving up into space at the camera, smiling even! Nice! Now where is that picture now? :)

Google Maps with Street View says on its website that it "lets you explore places around the world through 360-degree street-level imagery. You can check out restaurants, visit neighborhoods, or plan your next trip."

Or, if you are Jon Rafman, you can use the service to capture unique, unexpected, artistic and sometimes disturbing pictures of people in unusual settings.

Rathman's website, 9-eyes.com, gathers the pictures, and is forming a cult following.

Check out the pictures and tell us what you think. We have no idea how the suited man (or is it a mannequin?) ended up on a lonely, rural lane. Why is the boy hiding behind the garbage can? We have no idea about that, nor why the reindeer is running down the road, or why Rafman - who blurs every person's face - decided to blur the face of an elephant. But you'll find that and much more in the collection.

Be warned: 9-eyes contains many flipped birds and shiny moons of a decidedly non-lunar variety. If you're all right with that and you have time to kill, you know where to head.

G-d's Wings

After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park , forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast...because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would live.

The Gardener

For years Billee and I have passed this house and marveled at the floral display at 3725 No. Vassault St. in Tacoma. Last year there was no display and we had wondered if the Asian man who owns this house was ill. This year the display was back in force and we stopped this past Sunday to photograph it. Billee went up to the owner and told him how much we had enjoyed his garden all these years and he invited us to tour his creation. We found the backyard to be as beautiful as the front. He is Vietnamese, shy, very soft spoken, and speaks very little English, so we couldn't discuss too much with him about the garden. I hope you all enjoy this as much as we did.

As you can see a lot of the flowers are in pots. I guess this is so they can be changed easily.

The front of the house is not neglected,either. I wonder if he takes the pots in at night to keep them from being stolen.

Here is the master gardener! I wish we could have communicated. I will print up some of these photos and give them to him.

What would you do if by chance a UFO crash-landed in your back yard? In the case of Joe Lucky, an impoverished farmer on the brink of foreclosure, that is exactly what happened one shimmering night. Interestingly enough the back drop for Joe and the UFOSouthern Colorado region noted for exterrestrial and paranormal activity since time immemorial. Out of a quaint little science fiction story evolved an epic journey into the human experience as I read this wonderful piece written by Daniel Sanchez Leonetti.

Joe and the UFO truly was a journey for not only Joe Lucky but for the reader as well. I was thrust into the culture of Southern Colorado with colloquialisms, culture and history only found within this region. From humor and joy to the darkest of human emotions Joe and the UFO spanned the human persona. The characters came to life as they faced very real tribulations associated with an exterrestrial encounter. Heartwarming at times and ruthless as well, Joe and the UFO offers the reader an opportunity to introspectively examine their own emotions if poised with the situation that faced Joe Lucky and the other characters within this well written folktale.

You don’t have to be a UFO aficionado to appreciate this story for it’s a human tale and in some way a reflection of the era we live writhe with tumult and uncertainty. For the UFO aficionado this tale is a vindication of the realities that not only lay in the stellar beyond but within the souls of man. Joe and the UFO is bound to be a classic for within its pages is a lesson that all of mankind should heed.

Artist Limelight Featured Photographer

As I'm sure many of you remember, I used to have a monthly feature here at Photo Trek called the Photographer Spotlight. This was a regular article that I would do where I introduce another photographer and show some of their work. It was a very fun feature for me to do, and allowed me to get to know a lot of other photographers over the years. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue this feature due to other commitments in my life. At some point I may start it up again, but in the meantime, one of my featured photographers, Steve Grob , has started up his own version.

Steve is a very talented photographer, and does some incredible things with studio work and product photography. He's probably one of the best in that genre of the art that I have met. His new feature called "Artist Limelight" is designed to do a lot of the same things that were in the Photographer Spotlight, and we collaborated a bit on this project. He has not got things up and running over at Dark Fox Media, and has honored me with the first feature in this series.

I have to say, it was very humbling to read about my work in this fashion. He did a great job with the article, and I am deeply appreciative of his time and effort. This article can be found in his journal under the Artist Limelight tab. Here is a reprint for your reading pleasure.

Foreword

When I decided to go ahead with this ongoing project, Artist Limelight, I struggled with the decision as to whom I would feature with the first solicited article. (Solicited meaning someone I’ve invited to be in this feature) This was especially difficult because my wife is also a photographer, and I have many friends and family members that are artists in some form. As selfish as this may sound, I granted a lot of credence to someone that I have the most in common with, not only in choice of hobby, but also in a philosophical sense in their commitment to family and giving back to community. Having said that, I decided on Greg Kiser.
I’ve known Greg for a couple of years now as an online friend and fellow photographer. I have a lot of respect for him personally and of his work. He is very skilled in many areas of photography, but the mainstay of his work is in photographing the landscape. If you check out his galleries, you can easily see that he is a very busy man. As a family man and full time police officer, he manages to balance his life well between family, career, and photography. I strongly recommend photographers, especially those interested in landscapes to check out his work and pay close attention to his composition techniques and approach to lighting.

"At Peace" by Greg A. Kiser
Greg was born in North Carolina, and grew up hiking, camping in, and exploring the natural beauty this breathtaking area has to offer. Building models was his first hobby that stayed with him as he grew older. This hobby offered the chance for creation and the challenges of adding intricate details to his work. In high school, is goal was to attend either West Point or Annapolis and enter the military as an officer. This plan changed with the onset of Desert Storm, and Greg attended Appalachian State University and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He began his career as a police officer in 1999.
As a street cop, Greg is able to offer positive things to his community and help make an impact on lives that desperately need someone like him to intervene. But, being a cop is not easy, and Greg realized early that he needed an outlet in his life to take his mind from the human tragedies he faced every day.
"Exposed Granite (B&W)" by Greg A. Kiser
Greg did not necessarily start out in photography as a beginner. His interest in photography came early in life and he was always the designated family photographer. His Father still has the Konica 35mm camera Greg used to watch him shoot with. Greg states, “I remember him telling me how a polarizing filter worked and the whole concept amazed me. “ In his website biography is stated, “For years Greg had been the designated family photographer, but that was the extent of it. He made snapshot memories…the kind of pictures that really only mean something to those who were there at the time.”
When Greg was about thirty years old, he began having more personal challenges. Marital problems led to his divorce, and his Mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, forcing her into an assisted living facility. For a brief time, he considered going back to building models again to help take his mind off things. He began taking long drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway, a breathtaking area he discovered while attending college. In his questionnaire, he states, “I couldn’t figure out why I felt like a visitor just driving through.”

In 2004, his interest in photography began to increase. After using a variety of 35mm point and shoot cameras and Polaroid’s, he moved into the digital SLR world upon receiving a Sony FD-200 as a Christmas gift from his Mother. This offered new opportunities and opened up new doors to creativity. This also illuminated his interest in art, and his desire to express his feelings and deal with the many challenges in his life. “I had found my way to interact with the mountains of NC and at the same time found a way to take a mental vacation from my life.”

As we know, life leads us through many interesting turns. Greg’s life is at a turning point, being engaged to his dear friend Toni, with their marriage planned for January of 2011. Toni is very supportive of Greg’s photographic work, and he credits her for several photos in his gallery and the gallery itself. She pushed him to building a new website after his lost his AOL website in 2008. She joins him on many photo treks, helps with the portrait shoots, and choreographs and directs the looks of his portrait works. (I’ve never had the opportunity to get to know Toni, but I see her references in Greg’s Facebook posts, and she seems to be an extraordinary woman)

"Lofty Aspirations" by Greg A. Kiser
During the creation of this article, Greg shared with me an interesting and entertaining story regarding “that one picture that got away.” He states, “When I was in college, one of my classes took a hiking trip (yeah I went for the hard classes!) up Grandfather Mountain in the late summer. The weather was hot and muggy with lots of clouds. I wasn’t a photographer at the time, and didn’t even think about carrying a camera with me for this hike. It was a rough hike and I didn’t enjoy it all that much…that is until we got to the top of the mountain. The last few feet of the trail broke through the clouds at the top of the mountain. I found myself looking out over a sea of clouds with blue sky above. I could make out the tips of other peaks and summits over the ocean of cotton. I was standing not on a mountain, but on an island. That was in 1992, and the scene is still emblazoned in my mind as if I were standing there today. I wished that I had a camera when I was there beca use I could recognize the raw beauty of the scene. It affected me deeply, probably deeper than I will ever know. I think I am still in search of magical scenes like that to share with others through photography.”
One of the main things Greg likes about photography is that he’s always learning, which he finds odd since he doesn’t particularly like school. For him photography is more than a visual recording of a scene, but the different aspects and levels of importance of the image can be changed to express Greg’s view as he sees it. Through his photography, he strives to gain and utilize the same attention to detail he once gave to his model building hobby.

As said before, Greg’s favorite subject is the landscape, but he’s also very attracted to waterfalls and rustic scenes. He has a knack for recognizing and showing the beautiful parts of these types of scenes like the textures of aged wood and the rust of a vehicle along the side. Though his reads many photography books, magazines, and takes part in photography forums, Greg is largely self-taught. He sells photographs from his website in print form and hopes to use photography to supplement his income upon retirement. He also states, “My newly formed retirement plans include a large cardboard box that I will be living in which is slightly different from the lakeside cabin I had envisioned.” This statement from Greg caught me as amusing, but in truth, I don’t think he’s going to have to worry about that.
As for his equipment preference, Greg says he would love to get into digital medium format but for now works with his Canon 5D. This replaced his 40D after an unfortunate slip on the ice earlier this year. His lens collection includes Canon’s L Series of lenses ranging from 17mm to 400mm.
For his influences, Greg finds Mark Lucock who is the author of Succeed in Landscape Photography. He has interacted with Mr. Lucock on several occasions, in fact. Other influences include John Shaw, Ansel Adams, Jack Dykinga, Boyd Norton, Galen Rowell, and David Muench. Greg’s biggest goal he has achieved was learning how to use a DSLR camera in full manual. He has reached the level of competence that “far exceeds” his initial expectations.

Greg has entered photos into the Dixie Classic Fair many times, and has received first, third, and fourth place ribbons in the Professional Photographer categories. He doesn’t enter into the fair any more or any other competitions but has received some for his original Photo Trek Blog.

In the Italian town of Cremona, owners of several parked cars came outside to find a gnarly string of twisted metal. The culprit was the driver of a year-old Lamborghini Gallardo. But not one person called the police. They were already there – climbing out of their totaled Lamborghini.
That’s right, the Italian police just totaled one of their three-strong Lamborghini fleet donated straight from the car-maker. The 204mph police package Lambos were outfitted with all kinds of gadgets to make even Inspector Gadget drool. Among the techy outfitting was a defibrillator and cooler-chest for donor organ transport.
The Italian Police flagship was on its way back from a display at a student job fair when it swerved to avoid another vehicle as it pulled out of a gas station. As it lost control it took out a number of parked cars before coming to rest beneath a small SUV.
And of course there was no shortage of cell-phone cameras on scene for all the different angles of the wreckage. You can check some of them out at Youreporter.it.
With 30 officers specially trained by Lamborghini to drive the vehicle, we know one Italian police officer that instantly made 29 enemies.

100 days in Glacier National Park

This summer, Glacier Park Magazine editor Chris Peterson undertook a photographic project to take photos of Montana's Glacier National Park over 100 consecutive days, starting on May 1, 2009, for a traveling photo show in 2010 to commemorate Glacier's Centennial. He used a mix of film and digital cameras, including an 8 by 10 field camera, a Kodak Pocket Vest camera, circa 1909, and a Speed Graphic, among others. His idea was to use the cameras that would have been used over the course of the Park's 100 years. While Chris was kind enough to share some of his photos below, you really should check out his whole set of 100. All photos and captions are from Chris Peterson. (24 photos total)

35 Beautiful Photography Websites

Interest in photography has exploded over the last 10 years, largely thanks to the developments in digital photography. Cameras and computers have become cheaper and more powerful, software more sophistocated and printers can now print photos that are as good (if not better) than anything produced in a chemical darkroom. Now, once you’ve acquired a digital setup, the economic restrictions of film and development costs have been removed and the cost of photography is virtually nil.
Along with these developments in photography has been the parallel development of the Web. Ten years ago websites were largely clumsy, HTML driven constructions. Today, contemporary photographers have powerful tools such as Flash, WordPress and DreamWeaverwith which to develop their websites. Photographers can also sell their work through companies such as PhotoShelter or ImageKind, and through photo libraries such as Alamy and iStockPhoto, opening up new revenue streams.
The result is that photographers are finding new and exciting ways to showcase their best work online. We took a look at some of the beautiful photography websites that we could find, analyzing the design trends and the reasons why these websites work.

Gavin Gough
Gavin Gough is a travel photographer currently living in Thailand. His website is a brilliant example of self-promotion. The front page has a small flash movie at the top and a large photo underneath. Dig deeper into the website and there are photo galleries showing only his best work, a blog for personal anecdotes and tutorials, and a stock photo gallery hosted by PhotoShelter.

Timothy Allen
Timothy Allen’s website is a WordPress powered blog, slightly corporate in nature as it’s put together in conjunction with the BBC. The design is very effective, there is a fast moving slideshow at the top of the front page, and below that, a moving strip of thumbnails that are links to the latest articles. The latest article is published underneath, and at the bottom five short columns display links to articles on Photography, Travel, Video, Tutorials and My Musings. The front page is designed to wow the visitor and provide easy to follow links to all the interesting content within the website.

Mitchell Kanashkevich
A beautiful website, the reader is in no doubt that the website belongs to a travel photographer. Navigation is clear and simple and the photo galleries are stunning. The photographer has a small collection of his best photos. This is very important, because the quality of a portfolio is often judged by the weakest shot.

Bruce Percy
A very simple design that leaves the viewer no doubt what he’s seeing. A quick glance is enough to see what the photographer does. Navigation again clear and simple. The black background works well with the minimalist design.

Face On Images
Photographer Les Forrester’s website is a masterpiece of simple design. The colour scheme of dark grays and blacks, with typography in gray, white and red is very effective. A moving slide show shows off some of his best photos on the front page, along with a nice introduction and the latest news.

Your Beautiful Photography
Once you get past the splash page the simplicity and beauty of this website becomes apparent. The photos dominate, presented against a simple white background.

Pablo Corral Vega
Pablo Corral Vega is an established, well known photojournalist and his website reflects the quality of his work. Note the simplicity of the opening page design, a stunning photo at the top, the photographer’s name above, and more links below.

Colin Prior
Simple design from Colin Prior, a British landscape photographer. A simple to navigate menu bar, an abstract photo that makes the perfect backdrop for some text, and below some inviting images that draw the visitor into the different parts of the website.

Mark Velasquez
Mark Velasquez’s website features imaginative, colourful photography, presented in a series of easy to navigate photo galleries. One reason I like the photo gallery layout because it’s easy to navigate, the photos are relatively small and quick to load, and the photos are presented against a neutral gray background.

Jeremy Cowart
Sometimes, a pro photographer just needs a fantastic looking website that displays photos and little else. SEO and speed aren’t priorities, because the url will be given to potential clients. The important thing is to wow the viewer. That’s what Jeremy Cowart’s website does.

Paolo Boccardi
A big photo on the front page, easy to navigate links (I really like the little windows that pop up when you mouseover the links) and then horizontal photo galleries. Lovely!

Anna Kuperberg Photography
A beautiful flash driven website. Excellent photography, a front page slideshow to show off the work, and a music soundtrack that seduces the viewer. A very professional design.

Vincent Laforet
Open with a bang! Vincent Laforet’s website opens with his video Reverie, a video which created so much excitement amongst the photography world that it was downloaded over 1.5 million times the first 10 days it was online.

Chase Jarvis
Chase Jarvis is famous amongst photographers for his blog, but his website is a masterpiece of web design. The viewer is greeted by a large, dramatic, slideshow on the front page, and an easy to navigate menu. The portfolio pages are spectacular, and the flash based design looks great.

Stefan Soell
Another horizontal photo gallery, this one is interesting because the gallery is contained within a frame. Frames are a little outdated, but the advantage here is that the viewer can switch between portfolios without leaving the front page. The photographer sells fine art prints and books through the site, and the viewer is left in no doubt that he’s an expert in his craft.

Amy Deputy Photography
Another flash based website, beautiful in its simplicity. The front page consists of four simple square images, link text and the photographer’s name and logo. The soft pastel colours of the photos on the front page complement each other. The website is also supported with a blog. Note the high quality of the portfolios. The website makes it clear that the photographer operates at the high end of the market.

Jessica Hilltout
Fine art photographer Jessica Hilltout’s website has a very nicely designed front page, organising her work into three themes. Her name’s displayed along the top, and the categories along the bottom. A very simple, but effective website.

Chris Phelps
A bold, graphic image on the front page, complemented by a simple navigation and design. A very effective portfolio presentation. All supported by a blog. Nice, very nice.

Trends In Photography Websites

Blogs
The best are entertaining and informative, establishing the photographer’s expertise and building a relationship of trust and credibility with potential clients.
Teaching
Photographers are passing on their knowledge and experience to beginners and enthusiasts.
Selling
Photographers are promoting themselves and their work. Some stock photographers sell their photos through their websites rather than the big agencies.
Workshops
Many established photographers earn money by teaching, and promote their workshops on their websites.
Social networking
Many photographers have a page on Facebook, or a Flickr or Twitter account.
Flash
Flash-based websites can be beautiful and effective, freeing the web designer from the limitations of HTML and CSS. The downside is that they’re expensive to create, can take time to download and aren’t good for SEO. Often used by pro photographers who will send their url to interested parties and need a spectacular showcase for their images.
HUGE photos
Photography websites are naturally dominated by images. A recent trend is to display large photos for maximum impact.
Sophisticated design
Photographers are visual artists and need the design of their websites to reflect this. Good design often works in the background by making websites quick to load, easy to navigate and search engine friendly.
Content over design
No matter how good the design, content is king. It may look pretty, but if it doesn’t inform and entertain, your visitors won’t return. Some of the most popular photography websites are nothing more than a free Blogger blog.

A rare sight!! Yosemite National Park, California, USA

This park was gazetted as a national park in 1890. It is world famous for its rugged terrain, waterfall and century-old pine trees. It covers 1200 sq km and the "fire" waterfall of El Capitan is one of the most spectacular of all scenery.
The spectacular view of the waterfall is created by the reflection of sunlight hitting the falling water at a specific angle. This rare sight can only be seen at 2-week period towards the end of Feburary. To photograph this rare event, photographers would often have to wait and endure years of patience in order to capture them. The reason is because its appearance depend on a few natural phenomena occurring at the same time and luck.
1st, Is the formation of the waterfall - The water is formed by the melting of snow and ice at the top of the mountain. It melts between the month of December and January and by the end of February there might not have much snow left to melt.
2nd, is the specific angle of the sunray hitting the falling water - The sun's position must be exactly at a particular spot in the sky. This occurs only in the month of February and at the short hours of dusk. If it is a day full of clouds or something blocking the sun, you can only take pictures of your own sorry faces on the waterfall. It coincides with the fact that the weather in the National Park at that time of the year is often volatile and unpredictable. It compounds the difficulty of getting these pictures.
Someone did !!! and we all get to see it !!!

Detail shooting of flowers and fruit can bring beautiful, high saturation color and intricate textures. This kind of shooting is best shot with a good zoom lens so you do not blur the photo with standing incredibly close to the subject matter. It is also helps to turn on the manual zoom so you can focus on the particular detail in the flower that you want to show.

Shooting on a medium light day also greatly helps the vibrancy and illumination of the petals. High light can cause blowout and overexposure of the image which will wipe out all the intense details. Low light will cause color distortion and inaccuracy. It will be important as well to adjust your ISO setting, if you can, up and down per shot as you need to depending on the direction the flowers are facing. Also, light meter carefully to bring out the richness of the color without having to do a lot of post work on the computer.

Also, consider the form and shape of each group of flowers you are shooting. The contours of the edges may be the most interesting so you could show the flower from the profile side. Or, the texture and softness of the flower may be best shown in intense, zoomed in detail. Or, perhaps show the grouping of tiny flowers by not zooming in too much and allowing space to show the bending of the stems as well. Perfection is not always the goal in shooting this kind of subject matter. Each flower has its own personality. Try to bring out their character by embracing their imperfections as well as their color. The background, if left simple, can also be used to bring out their intricacies.

Photographing fruit is a similar situation to shooting flowers. They often have amazing color and their abundance in a group are fascinating to capture. Their textures and shape are interesting and through proper exposure, their high saturation color can also be shown in all their vibrancy.

These were shot at an outside farmer’s market which is ideal lighting. Bunches of fruit can also be shot at a grocery store, but often, the fluorescent lights can make the colors inaccurate and dull. You may need to shoot different fruits at different times of year, depending on when they are in season and at peak ripeness and color. This will depend a lot on where you live and what is available. Keeping the exposure accurate is also important to keep the roundness of their shapes. Over exposing the image can take away the edges and blend each piece together.
Remember to experiment with each image to capture the subjects at their maximum color. You may want to bracket in case the lighting changes or the color is not 100% accurate.

24 Rooms Tucked Into One

It looks like open space, but behind movable walls, this tiny apartment holds surprises.

GARY CHANG stood in the middle of his apartment on a recent Saturday morning, ignoring a message from his Nintendo Wii on the wall-size screen: “Are you fidgeting? I can’t seem to analyze you.” He repositioned the game system’s balance board, stepped on for a second run of downhill skiing and began to shift from side to side, a computer-generated figure swishing in time with him across the room.
Soon enough, having worked up an appetite, he was ready to move on. He used a remote control to raise the screen, revealing a large yellow-tinted window behind it, filling the room with radiance. “Like sunshine,” Mr. Chang said, though the colorized gray daylight made the view — a forest of apartment towers in Hong Kong’s bustling working-class Sai Wan Ho district — look dusky, like an old sepia print.
He grabbed a handle near the wall-mounted television, pulling a section of the wall itself toward the center of the room. Behind it, a small countertop with two burners, a sink and a spice rack appeared. Opposite the countertop, on the back of the now-displaced wall, he lowered a hinged worktop made of a lightweight laminate of honeycombed aluminum. Suddenly, he was standing in a kitchen.
This room — the “maximum kitchen,” he calls it — and the “video game room” he was sitting in minutes before are just 2 of at least 24 different layouts that Mr. Chang, an architect, can impose on his 344-square-foot apartment, which he renovated last year. What appears to be an open-plan studio actually contains many rooms, because of sliding wall units, fold-down tables and chairs, and the habitual kinesis of a resident in a small space. As Mr. Chang put it, “I glide around.”
Mr. Chang, 46, has lived in this seventh-floor apartment since he was 14, when he moved in with his parents and three younger sisters; they rented it from a woman who owned so much property that she often forgot to collect payment.
Like most of the 370 units in the 17-story building, which dates to the 1960s, the small space was partitioned into several tiny rooms — in this case, three bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hallway. Mr. Chang’s parents shared the master bedroom (though when they first moved in, his father lived in the United States, where he worked as a waiter at Chinese restaurants in various cities). His sisters shared a second bedroom, and the third, almost incredibly — although not unusually for Hong Kong — was occupied by a tenant, a woman in her 20s, whom Mr. Chang remembers only for the space she took up.Mr. Chang slept in the hallway, on a sofa bed.
These days, he uses a hydraulic Murphy bed of his own design, hidden behind a sofa during the day. “That old routine of folding out the bed is similar in spirit to what I do today,” he said. “But the reasons are different. Then, it was just necessary. Now, it’s all about transformation, flexibility and maximizing space.”
MR. CHANG’S experiment in flexible living began in 1988, when his family moved into a bigger apartment a few blocks away, with his grandparents and uncles.
Mr. Chang was then working for the P&T Group, an architectural firm, and living in a rented room near the University of Hong Kong, where he had studied architecture. His mother suggested that he take over the lease on their old apartment, “because the rent was unusually low,” he said. Instead he bought it, for about $45,000.
He had been itching to tear down the walls since his teenage years, when he sketched new designs for the family home, and he then began in earnest. In the last two decades, he has renovated four times, on progressively bigger budgets as his company, Edge Design Institute, has grown. His latest effort, which took a year and cost just over $218,000, he calls the “Domestic Transformer.” The allusion to toy robots seems apt, given the science-fiction quality of the color scheme — mostly black and silver, washed in eerie yellow light.
But if the apartment is a space for play, it’s very much the grown-up kind, involving the pleasures of luxury: Behind one movable wall of shelving is an extra-large Duravit bathtub. A glass shower stall doubles as a steam room with color therapy and massage. The Toto toilet has a heated seat and remote control bidet, and sound emanates from a six-speaker home entertainment system.

Moving partitions and opening cabinet doors reveals stacks of carefully chosen objects: Alessi dishes and Arne Jacobsen cutlery; what Mr. Chang calls an “altar of Muji accessories,” including travel bottles and neatly packaged tissues; and several thousand CDs filling an entire wall. (Mr. Chang, a technophile who checks on his apartment with a Web cam while traveling, refuses to switch to MP3 files because he loves CD cases and liners.)
The need for space to accommodate these collections was what drove his latest renovation.
In 1998, as part of his third renovation, which he called “Flexible Curtains,” Mr. Chang had remade the apartment as a single open room, in pale hues, with shelves concealed behind curtains. But his collections had grown too large to be contained by the shelving, and piles of objects had begun to colonize the glossy white-painted floor.
It is a familiar predicament in Hong Kong, one explored in “Domestica Invisible,” a 2006 exhibition at the city’s Goethe-Institut of Leung Chi-Wo’s photographs of clutter in cramped apartments. A curator described the condition as “a fundamental aspect of the city’s spirit,” and wrote, “there is no longer the capacity to enjoy open space, nor the room for imagining alternative lives.”
Mr. Chang hopes that some of his home’s innovations might be replicated to help improve domestic life in Hong Kong, which has been troubled in recent years. The population grew by nearly a half-million in just the last 10 years, and between 2003 and 2007, reports of new cases of child, spousal and elder abuse nearly doubled, something social workers attribute in part to new social pressures caused by the city’s ongoing shortage of space.
“It’s a big problem,” Mr. Chang said. “Killing each other is not uncommon.”
“People feel trapped,” he said. “We have to find ways to live together in very small spaces.”
In Mr. Chang’s solution, a kind of human-size briefcase, everything can be folded away so that the space feels expansive, like a yoga studio.
The wall units, which are suspended from steel tracks bolted into the ceiling, seem to float an inch above the reflective black granite floor. As they are shifted around, the apartment becomes all manner of spaces — kitchen, library, laundry room, dressing room, a lounge with a hammock, an enclosed dining area and a wet bar.
One can imagine three, possibly four people living here, using Mr. Chang’s double bed and the guest bed that hovers over the bathtub — though six or seven, the number of residents when Mr. Chang was growing up, would be another matter.
Acoustic privacy is limited. When Mr. Chang is entertaining, anyone who wants to use the phone must do so in the shower (also known as “the phone booth”).
Still, Mr. Chang is determined to see his ideas put to use in new multi-unit buildings. He has invited a number of developers to visit, and has meticulously documented his apartment’s history in a book, “My 32m2 Apartment: A 30-Year Transformation” (MCCM Creations, 2008).
Buying a new apartment might have been a less expensive solution to his storage problem, he admitted. “But why do that?” he asked as he stood in the kitchen making noodle soup. “I see my place as an ongoing experiment.”

In 1999, it was discovered that many of the trees in the Craig City Park were diseased and were becoming hazardous. Trees are presious and there was backlash from the community about the decision to remove the trees.

City employee Mike Shelton came up with the idea to have chainsaw carvers to whittle the stumps into pieces of art.

Steam explodes from a glacier-topped Iceland volcano in an aerial picture taken April 14, 2010, by the Icelandic Coast Guard. The new eruption began Tuesday, just as the headline-making lava fountains at a neighboring, ice-free vent were dying down.

Volcanic heat is rapidly melting the 650-foot-thick (200-meter-thick) ice block atop the vent, which is part of Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Fearing floods, officials evacuated about 800 area residents at the first signs of the second eruption, said Páll Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland's Institute of Earth Sciences. (Read "Iceland Volcano Erupts Under Glacier, Triggers Flood.")
Initial reports suggest the glacial melt has raised local rivers by as much as ten feet (three meters). A major road has been closed and water continues to gush into the ocean, but as of press time, there are no reports of casualties.

Pandas are native to China.

Like other bears, they normally live alone, except the breeding season.

But according to some recent studies, pandas sometimes meet outside this time, too.

Unlike other bears, pandas don’t hibernate in winter. Quite the contrary, as you can see on the picture, they love winter.

Panda likes bamboo. Bamboo is about 99% of panda’s diet.

The birthrates of pandas are very low.

Those cute bears have been a target for hunting and poaching since very old times.

This is why pandas are extremely endangered species.

Fortunately, pandas are now one of the world’s most protected animals.
One of the cutest as well, I think.

It has been a long while since I have participated in Carly's Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot. It just seems like the themes lately didn't play into what I had to offer, and then too I've been quite busy and just haven't had the chance to participate as much as I would have liked. This current theme is just too good to pass up though. Carly wants us to create a 2009 Gallery of our best work from last year. This is about as open ended as it gets, so what I'm going to do is select one photograph from each room of my gallery which was created in 2009 to post here. Its going to be hard to do, but I think it will be fun for me to try. So....here we go starting with the Waterfall Room.
